Pastor Hubert B Barnes and Reverend Evelyn Barnes
Pastor Hubert Barnes was raised in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania. He confessed Jesus as Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized by the late Pastor A.E. Atkins at the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Lansdowne.
He has been married to the former Evelyn Warfield for thirty-six years. They currently reside in Lumberton, New Jersey and, are the parents of three adult children and three grandchildren. He graduated from Lincoln University in Pa. with a Bachelor of Arts degree, the Philadelphia Biblical University with a Master of Divinity degree, and the Villanova University School of Law with a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree.
Pastor Barnes was ordained as a deacon at the Second Baptist Church of Bethlehem, Pa. under the pastorate of Rev. J. Hargrove. He was subsequently licensed to preach and ordained in the ministry at the Antioch Baptist Church of North Hills, Pa. under the pastorate of the late Rev. T.N. Nobles.
Pastor Barnes served as the pastor of the Millcreek Baptist Church of Philadelphia for two years. He was subsequently called to the pastorate of the Star of Hope Baptist Church in Philadelphia where he has served for more than twenty years.
Pastor Barnes’ favorite scripture is found in John 9:3 wherein our Lord declared that “We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work.” (NASB)
Pastor Barnes has a strong passion for ministry and has been powerfully impacted by the Lord’s command to “…make disciples…”
Rev. Evelyn Barnes is happily married to the Reverend Hubert
Barnes, pastor of the Star of Hope Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Pa. Evelyn, who loves her role as family
nurturer, is the proud mother of three adult children, a son in law, a daughter
in law; and grandmother to six school-aged children.
Evelyn received a Masters in Education degree from Temple University
and a Masters in Biblical Studies from the Philadelphia Biblical
University. She was licensed to preach
the gospel on July 11, 2008 at the Star of Hope Baptist Church, under the
pastorate of her husband, Reverend Hubert Barnes.
Through the years Evelyn has been very involved in teaching
and workshop ministries, having a special passion for helping women to “journey
well” through the struggles of this life by totally relying on the Words, will
and way of our Lord. She is the director
of the women’s programs at the Star of Hope Church where she has been
privileged to begin many new ministries, to include: the church’s homeless ministry, Young Adult
Sunday School class, Women’s Support Group, women’s Christian book club,
ministers’ wives breakfast fellowship, women’s breakfast Bible fellowship, and
a mentoring program involving senior citizens with single parents. Evelyn also serves
as a part time administrator at Tabor Children’s Services, Inc. where she is
actively involved in developing programs to ensure permanency for foster care youth
who are in need of an adoptive home.
In considering all of her endeavors, Evelyn states that it
is her joy to serve the Lord in support of church ministries and to share in
other opportunities to advance the cause of Christ in this troubled world. When confronted with life’s challenges, she
clings to the words of David who in Psalm 121 declared: “I will lift up my eyes
to the mountains; from where shall my help come? My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.” (NASB)
